Sunday Sweets: Gamer Goodness

As you Epbot readers know, I've been playing Ghostbusters and generally geeking/freaking out (once again) about all things Ghostbusters-related this week. Which is why when I saw this first cake I knew today's post would have to be game-themed, just so I'd have an excuse to post it.

The genius! The detail! The ghost-bustin' geekiness!

Made by Lyndsay Shrubb of Ontario

Everything you see here is edible except for the tubing and wand handle. Lyndsay made the wires and ribbon from fruit-by-the-foot and licorice.

Granted, this is one cake where you'd have to be sure to peel the fondant off before eating it (hello, stained teeth!), but that's a small price to pay for such sheer unbridled awesomeness.

Don't worry; I have more goodies, too.

Here's a cute Companion Cube from Portal:

Submitted by Undulattice, made by All About The Cake

Last month I downloaded the free version they made available for the Mac, but I haven't played it yet. Tell me, gamers, is it better on the PS3? Seems like it'd have to be, but I'd love your opinion if you've played it.

Some day I also really want to try Scribblenauts - and not just because this cake is so stinkin' adorable:

Sub'd by Alexandria DB, but I don't have the baker. Anyone know?

Although I admit the cake is helping. ;)

How about a little BioShock?

Ah, Bioshock, home of the oh-so-evil doorways...

This cake is especially inspirational because it's only the 4th fondant cake the baker ever attempted! Yep, futurestar101 is not a pro at all, but look at the amount of detail she achieved in the vending machine. Just amazing.

Here's one for you WOWers:

Sub'd by Natalie and made by nweppler

One of the best World of Warcraft cakes I've seen. I love the 3D lettering.

And finally, something from one of John's favorite games, Halo:

By Mike's Amazing Cakes

It takes a master chef to make a master chief! ;)

My Thai Font

The best man at Julian and Janny's wedding decided that he wanted to surprise them with a cake. It was supposed to have "congratulations" written on it in both English and Thai since the bride was from Thailand.

Unfortunately, however, somewhere along the line someone's computer (probably a pc*) didn't recognize the Thai font (surprise, surprise), and so changed the font to...

waaait for it...

You guessed it! Gibberish!

(Or more precisely, gibberish that means nothing to anyone other that a few computer programmers who will no doubt point out my immense stupidity and poor lineage in the comment section.)

What gets me is that not only did the guy who printed it out not notice, but the hugely talented decorator didn't question it, either! For some reason I'm picturing a perfectly groomed English guy in a starched jacket and cummerbund saying, "Hm, yes, well. This is a tad awkward. But tally ho! Onward! What what! Good night, Westley! Good work! Sleep well! I'll most likely kill you in the morning!"

Wait, no. That's the Dread Pirate Roberts. Anyway.

Thanks to Julian and Janny
*Actually, it was a Commodore 64

Update: Apparently the font is not gibberish. It's called Mojibake or "an unintelligible sequence of characters." So, ya know. Gibberish. Only not gibberish. Everybody clear? Good good...

Here, There, and Everywhere

All together, now!

Hip, hip, it's hip to not care!

It's not too hard to figure out; I see it every day.

And those who are the laziest have gone the Wrecky way.

You see them in the bakery,

It don't look like a lot of fun.

But don't you try to right it,

'Cuz Cake Wrecks' time has come!

Don't tell me that they're crazy,

Don't tell me they're aware,

Cuz I can see what's going on:

It's hip to not care!

(Here, there, and "'cross entire front."

Hip, hip, so hip to not care!)

Kerensa, Doug B., Bree A., & Duana S., you might think I'm crazy, but I don't even care. I still like Huey Lewis and the News.

From john: Hey guys! We think that probably everything is fixed with the formatting on the page. If it's still wonky for you, however, would you e-mail me and tell me about it at comments(at)cakewrecks.com? Thanks! -j

Wreckage in its Proper Form

You know that form you have to fill out when ordering a cake? The one that tells the baker what to write? Well, it's really important.

No, I mean really, REALLY important.

As in, fill in every blank, or suffer the consequences:

Aw, that Eva: always waiting 'til the last minute to make up her mind.

And for goodness' sake, don't get all fancy and try to use shorthand to save time:

It's like a code. An excessively punctuated code.

Whatever happens, though, you can take comfort in knowing that every order is personally inspected and signed off on by a supervisor:

Thanks, Patricia.

Although I think you missed the giant 3 masquerading as a "W."
Just sayin'.

Elizabeth, Monica, & Steve P., now you know. And according to the shirt I'm wearing today, knowing is half the battle. (The other half is LASERS.)

Nothing To See Here

Parental Note: This post contains extreme childishness not at all appropriate for children.

Move along.

He blinded me with...science.

Who's up for a snowball fight?

(I can't tell if the middle guy is volunteering or flipping me off.)

A pink bowling pin + a pair of bowling balls = everyone's mind in the gutter.

The Force is strong with this one.

Who needs third base?

Gee, these bones look a little dry. Do you suppose the grill chef is a master baster?

Carrie, Meg N., Tracy, Melanie V., Carrie G., & Amy L., I hear it relieves tension.

Grilling. I'm talking about grilling.

We...... Need Your Help!

Hi Guys!

We've been tweaking some things here on the site recently in an attempt to improve load time and reduce glitches, but we're afraid this tweaking may have angered the tiki gods/gremlins/Blogger bogeys. And since every web browser presents a whole new fun set of complications, testing them all out is difficult.

That's where you come in.

Please, tell us in the comments if you had any problems loading, viewing or interacting with the site today. (This includes any RSS feed wonkiness.) In addition, if you don't mind, please let us know if your virus software or filters are blocking the site or any of the pictures. And remember, this is for posterity so, be honest.

Thanks, everyone!

Update: There are no images on this post and the link at the bottom of this post for Help for Haiti should not have an image either.

'Nother Update: Hey, Internet Explorer users! First of all, you really should be using a different browser. [grin] However, we know you don't all have a choice in the matter, so we're still working on getting all the IE kinks worked out. We'll update again when we've made more progress, but please be patient (and maybe try Firefox) in the mean time. Thanks!

Evolution of a Wreck

First, there was the football helmet CCC:

Although you'll have to take my word for it on the whole "helmet" part.

Over the years, Wreckerators struggled to make the helmet CCC recognizable...

...with limited success.

Ok, extremely limited.

You know what, just forget the "success" part.

Anyway, one day someone realized that the answer was a specially shaped baking pan.

And a while later, someone else figured maybe that specially shaped baking pan should be helmet-shaped.

And all was well.

UNTIL....

You know how Wreckerators are always using shaped pans for ridiculous and completely unrelated designs? Like upside-down heart grad cakes, and guitar-shaped beer bottles? Yeah? Well, what would you imagine a determined Wreckerator could make out of a football helmet shape? Hmm?

Think carefully, now.

Any ideas?

No?

Give up?

Ok. Keep scrolling.

Jennifer D., Shellie M., Holli M., Chris B., Melissa G., Adam S., & Drew, it's like you could almost reach out and touch it, huh? Really ground-breaking use of technology. Although, I must say, now I feel oddly depressed....
